Meet your instructor in Santa Maria on Sal Island for private and group kitesurfing lessons. Organised according to age and ability, island hoppers can join in for an intro session or commit to a full course for IKO accreditation. Choose from a full day intro course, single lesson or an IKO course that lasts up to 4 days. Whatever your level and previous experience, every lesson starts with a shore safety briefing and info on Santa Maria’s infamous trade winds. Starting with the essentials, learn about the kite, harness and kit – starting on the sand to get you used to the setup and safety systems with a trainer. Depending on how many hours you choose, intro courses contain the important body-dragging sessions in the water whilst more comprehensive multi-day courses move onto technical wind direction training like how to go towards the wind (upwind) and away from the wind (downwind) – finishing with a boarding session in the water with your instructor as an independent IKO rider.
The main riding season is November – June with a side offshore wind direction. Considered one of the best places in the world, its textbook conditions are also safe for beginners with long beaches, shallow water and choppy wave-riding opportunities out back.
