Activity Snapshot
Activity description
If you always wondered how it could be living underwater and had a real passion to explore the historical relics of ancient Greek time, then the open water course is ideal for you.
With an intensive course of four days, you can get to be an Open Water Diver, which means that you can dive down to 18m! With the Advanced Open Water courses, you will get to go down to 30 meters and get to visit places that no one has seen before.
You will enjoy diving in the open waters of Lesbos. You will start the courses on the Southside of the island. Firstly, in the diving center, you will take up the first theoretical courses about diving. The courses are specifically intended to get you familiar with the diving equipment and the safety rules, so you can enjoy safely your dives in "open waters". You will then do your first dives from the shore where you will get to know how to use the gear, and then you can go on diving from the boat 5 minutes away from the shore, where you can find rich underwater life.
The diving sites:
Mirmigi Reef
Just five minutes boat ride from Petra Base, Mirmigi reef is a large dive site, rich in marine life, and with beautiful topography. The dive starts at 5m and the reef goes down to 33meters deep. There's a mini labyrinth of underwater corridors at about 6 meters where you can make a perfect safety stop. There are usually no currents, making the site ideal even for non-experienced divers.
Ag.Georgios Reef
In this site, right behind the little island of Aghios Georgios, five minutes from the Petra Base, the diver can see a plethora of amphorae, in various conditions, from little pieces, scattered everywhere, to larger items in better condition. The dive starts at about 5m, and the maximum dive depth is at about 20meters making it perfect for less advanced divers, or for the second dive of the day.
Feggameni Reef
About 200m to the east of St.George island, 5mins from Petra Base, this site combines stunning underwater scenery, with large pinnacles rising from the bottom, with very rich marine life. It is quite common to see large fish here. The dive starts at -7m, and the depth goes to about 30 meters, but one can equally enjoy the site in more shallow waters.
Molyvos Reef
Right behind the picturesque village of Molyvos, 10mins from Petra Base, this site is an interesting dive in a rocky bottom that goes about 30 meters deep with breathtaking scenery. There are many red sponges, and many times you can see large numbers of nudibranchs. A site for advanced and novice divers alike.
Lamna Reef
About 20 minutes away from the Petra Base and right between Greece and Turkey, the two dive sites of this reef make some of the most interesting dives on the island. There is almost always a current in shallow waters, which subsides as one goes deeper. At 28m the diver sees three large iron anchors, 2 cannons, and a number of untouched amphorae, probably from the wreck of a wooden ship, which can no longer be seen. The site is one of the richest in fish on the island and has perfect visibility up to maybe 40m.
Korakas Wreck
Korakas Cape is the Northeastern corner of the island 30mins away from Petra Base. The wreck is from 1943, a 25m long metal merchant ship. It lays on its side, bow at about -16m, and stern at -28m. It is in very good condition, and it is possible to enter a small part of it. The site around the wreck is also very interesting, with a big metal anchor, a number of good condition amphorae, and the huge pile of cement sacks that are now like a rock on the seafloor! Marine life is also very rich!
