Activity description

Hike on Europe’s largest glacier and visit a naturally formed ice cave in this stunning Icelandic adventure.

The mighty Vatnajökull, Europe’s largest glacier, provides for a stunning guided glacier walk with a visit to a mesmerizing natural ice cave. Because caves are usually found quite high up, a glacier hike is needed in order to reach them making this experience two adventures into one!

The tour kicks off in Skaftafell where you will meet your expert guide. The hike begins towards the glacier tongue of the Vatnajökull ice cap. This portion will take about one hour. Upon reaching the glacier, your skilled guide will help you gear up and will provide important safety instructions before you set foot on the ice.

After a short walk on the glacier, you will explore a beautiful natural ice cave. This natural ever-changing phenomenon is only available during the winter when temperatures drop below zero. Each year new caves are formed in different locations. The truly awe-inspiring ice caves are what make this journey on the volcanic island of Iceland worth it. For the especially curious travelers, your guide will provide informative commentary on the history and geology of this area all throughout the hike.
