If you've ever done rock climbing you can agree it's one of the most amazing outdoor sports. Now experience ice climbing in Iceland, absolutely amazing!
Svínafellsjökull is located in Vatnajökull glacier, Europe's biggest glacier. Its snow-covered fields offer breathtaking views of the highest snowy peak of Iceland, Hvannadalshnjúkur, which rises more than 2,000 meters! Thanks to its incomparable beauty, the glacier has served as the scenery for dozens of movies like James Bond, Interstellar, and series like Game of Thrones.
The adventure will start from the Skaftafell Visitor Centre, where Troll Expeditions will provide you with all the equipment you need: crampons, ice axes, harnesses, and helmets. Then you will hop on the "Troll bus" and experience a scenic drive of about 10 minutes to the parking of the glacier. Stepping off the bus, a 15-minute walk will take you to the edge of the ice where your guide will show you how to put on the crampons so you can walk safely over ice.
Ice climbing is a variant of climbing in which you'll be secured with the help of a harness, a cord, and helmet as safety equipment. Also, you'll be required to use an ice ax or piolet, and weatherproof boots with crampons to make your way up. If you've experienced rock climbing, you'll love ice climbing!
Your guide will install massive ice screws and attach a rope to them before you are climbing up the ice walls or even rappelling into a crevasse and climb out again, this kind of climbing is called top rope and is one of the safest ways for beginners to experience challenging gravity. This will be the adventure of your lifetime.
