Hike surrounded by high peaks covered in Iceland's 4th biggest glacier in Europe: Mýrdalsjökull glacier. Explore the beautiful wild side of Iceland.
If what you're looking for is to experience one of the Earth's most amazing natural wonders while breathing in the fresh air of the Icelandic mountains, this hiking trip is perfect for you.
Sólheimajökull is an outlet glacier of Mýrdalsjökull, the 4th biggest glacier in Iceland. This natural beauty was the subject matter of the 2012 documentary Chasing Ice, which focused on climate change.
A surprising characteristic of this glacier is that underneath it, you can find an active volcano! The Katla, one of the largest in Iceland, lies semi-dormant under the ice since 1918 when it last erupted.
The adventure will start from the Sólheimajökull parking lot, where the guide will provide you with all the equipment you need: crampons, ice axes, harnesses, and helmets. A 15-minute walk will take you to the ice where your guide will show you how to put on the crampons so you can walk safely over ice.
You will spend between 1 hour and 1 hour and a half on the ice itself. You'll come across many crevasses, deep cracks in the surface of the glacier, and vertical shafts in the ice which are formed by melting water finding it’s way into fissures and cracks. Keep an eye open at the beginning of the walk because you'll be able to see lots of ash on the ice.
Since Iceland is a very active region, volcanic wise, eruptions are common under the ice of the glaciers. These eruptions leave big amounts of volcanic deposit right on the glacier which are shaping the landscape of the glacier. Your guide will introduce you in detail to the history of the glacier and tell you how the ice is formed on top of the mountains.

You will meet your guide at the parking lot at Sólheimajökull glacier parking lot and after a 30-minute hike, you will be at the glacier.
