Ride the Wild Atlantic Way with surfing lessons on Kilkee Beach.
A competition-worthy location loved by WSL wildcards and total beginners alike, the Atlantic coastline of County Clare is home to a vast network of established surf spots and secret right-handers that stretch from Kilkee to Loop Head. Learn your standing series on one of Ireland’s best-loved beach breaks on this beginner’s surf lesson.
This activity operates from Kilkee Beach in County Clare – with surfari-style lessons running from Kilkee Bay to White Strand, Doughmore Beach in Doonbeg and around the Loop Head. Kilkee Bay is protected from the Atlantic Ocean by the Duggerna Reef, making it ideal for beginner surfing.
Meet your instructor at the activity base for this beginner surf lesson from Kilkee Beach. Organised according to age and ability, this protected bay is celebrated for its safe, shallow beach and consistent beach break that offers waist-height whitewater – perfect for beginners. Starting off at the beach, kit up with a board and wetsuit, warming up with some beach games to get you going – then it's time to perfect your paddle technique and your standing series, learning how to jump to your feet and ride in a wave. Once you’ve practised your pop-up, it’s time to hit the surf, staying in the whitewater where your instructor will help you paddle out and push you onto a wave – riding it into shore! Building on your water confidence, improve your wave selection and board control – learning how to paddle out and drop in. After your lesson is over, head back to the base where you can dry off and enjoy a cup of tea at the end.
This activity operates throughout the year with lessons organised according to age and ability – as well as weather factors like tides and winds. Operating along Kilkee Bay, lessons may be organised at different beaches depending on swell and wave size. In the event lessons are displaced, group transport will be provided.
