Explore the north face of Italy's largest glacier with ice climbing excursions in the Adamello Massif.
Touch the void on this ice climbing excursion on the lesser known north face of the Pian di Neve Glacier. A demanding adventure in the shadow of Adamello Mountain (3,539m), test your tripoint technique on frozen waterfalls that cascade off the Adamello-Presanella Massif on this alpine pursuit in the heart of the Italian Alps.
Adamello Mountain is located in the namesake Adamello Brenta Nature Park as part of the Italian Alps. Accessed from the town of Vezza d'Oglio, a comune in the province of Brescia, in Lombardy, northern Italy. It is located in the upper Camonica Valley –part of the Adamello Ski area and neighbouring Tonale pass.
Meet your guide in Vezza d'Oglio for this ice climbing excursion in the Adamello Massif. A full day or half day intro activity in the heart of the Italian Alps, your guide will choose the exact location to suit the age and ability of the group from a selection of popular areas between Val d'Avio, Val Paghera, Val Saviore, Passo del Tonale and Ponte di Legno. Accessing remote locations by foot, kit up with crampons and ice axes as your mountain guide explains the basics of ice climbing – showing you how to read the ice, test the conditions, plant your equipment and use the signature frontpoint technique. Learn how to navigate a range of candles, walls, slides and gorges – starting from the floor and working your way up to more technical terrain as you improve.
Suited to climbers and mountaineers, previous ice climbing experience is not necessary but good physical fitness is essential. High altitudes and low temperatures on the exposed north face of the glacier ensure optimal conditions for ice climbing throughout the winter season. Your guide will make an assessment of the conditions on the day and itineraries can change based on the weather.
