This activity takes place on Tasman Glacier in Mt. Cook National Park. Including a scenic flight from Mt. Cook airport, this activity explores New Zealand's longest and largest glacier – including the highest peaks of the Southern Alps, Aoraki Mount Cook and Mount Tasman.
Meet your mountain guide at Mt. Cook airport for this heli hike on Tasman Glacier. With your mountain guide, you will fly high onto the “white ice” of New Zealand's longest and largest glacier – the mighty Tasman (Huapapa) – spending up to two hours exploring the mountain terrain. This guided trek is on an amazing landscape of fluted ice, runnels, moulins and sinuous winding streamlets. Follow your guide along the gently undulating terrain and learn more about this ancient ice – using crampons to make it a relatively easy traverse. A remote and unique environment, you will also have views of the Southern Alps – looking up to witness peaks like Mount Cook and Mount Tasman, towering above. Your helicopter returns you safely to Mt Cook Airport, flying close to the massive 1,000 metre high (3,200 feet) Hochstetter Icefall to finish your incredible adventure.
This activity is considered an easy & accessible hike that includes low-angled hiking terrain with uneven sections of rock, snow, or ice. An average level of fitness needed and you should be able to sustain 2 hours of walking, with plenty of rest breaks to enjoy the views.
