Activity description

Discover the heart of the Southern Alps on this heliski adventure in Mt. Cook National Park.

Home to 6 mountain ranges in Mt. Cook National Park, this impressive 5-run wilderness package takes place in New Zealand’s largest heliski area – offering both boarders and skiers a chance to ride the longest vertical drop  in the country – with some runs covering up to 800m! Discover ancient glaciers, azure lakes, and endless powder on this serious backcountry adventure.

Location
This activity is run & operated from the main helipad in Glentanner Airfield, and occasionally from Mount Cook Airport. Glentanner is only 15 minutes drive from Mt Cook village and less than an hour from Lake Tekapo. All runs take place in Mt. Cook National Park.

Activity
Meet your guide at the heli base in Aoraki/Mt. Cook for this full day heliskiing adventure in the Southern Alps.  A 5 run package in some of New Zealand’s best backcountry terrain, both skiers and boarders can enjoy the fun thanks to the clean lines and vertical drops made possible by using a bespoke helicopter service. After a quick kit check and safety briefing, you’ll chopper out into Mt. Cook National Park – travelling to a remote location in the heart of the mountain range, from here you can enjoy up to 800m of pure powder – following a guide through bowls, ridges, ski-throughs and unique ice formations. Stopping for a picnic lunch at altitude, each run is serviced by the helicopter – meaning no need to work up a sweat on the traverse. Top tip: there’s always the chance to add more runs to the activity on the day (based on group ability and conditions), check with your guide on the mountain.

Conditions
Suitable for both snowboarders and skiers, an intermediate level is required with the ability to comfortably ride red/black runs.  All-mountain or wider skis are preferred - giving better floatation in powder, and better control over a range of conditions. Alpine skis, telemark skis, or snowboards are all welcome. Ride on whatever you are comfortable with; just make sure the gear is well waxed.
