Activity description

Walk where dinosaurs once roamed and paddle over meltwater lakes that hold the secrets to the Pacific Ring of Fire on this kayak and hike adventure to Okarito Kiwi Sanctuary.

Travelling over the reflective waters of Lake Mapourika, your imagination starts to wonder...
What lies locked in the ice of the mighty Franz Josef Glacier?
And what Jurassic animals once called the temperate rainforest home?
Delve into the primaeval mysteries of the wild west coast with guided tours that track its past by land and lake.

Location
Lake Mapourika and Okarito Kiwi Sanctuary are located on the West Coast of New Zealand's South Island. It lies about 9 km's North of Franz Josef Glacier within the protected Westland Tai Poutini National Park - part of the tectonic Pacific Ring of Fire.

Activity
Setting off from Lake Mapourika in one or two-man touring kayaks for a 4-hour excursion, you will paddle across the calm waters and view the Southern Alpine mountain range and glacier system. Heading through rainforest creeks, you will moor your kayaks and travel on foot through the Okarito Jurrasic rainforest - home to the elusive Kiwi Bird.

Conditions
Morning excursions recommended for children and novice kayakers due to calmer weather.
Due to its alpine mountains and temperate rainforest, weather conditions can change dramatically with prevailing westerly winds bringing 5 metres of annual rainfall. Southern hemisphere summer months offer 17 hours of sunlight and top temperatures of 25°.

Transport

Glacier Kayaks offer courtesy transport from and back to the town.
