A placid lake where the mighty mountains are mirrored off crystalline meltwater - travel across the lake where rainforest and glacier first met with kayak excursions on Lake Mapourika.
There's something humbling about exploring in the shadows of New Zealand's Southern Alps. An environment like no other, look to the heavens for snowcapped mountains before paddling deep into the Westland ancient rainforest.
Lake Mapourika is located on the West Coast of New Zealand's South Island. It lies about 9 km's North of Franz Josef Glacier - not far from the Westland Tai Poutini National Park.
Offering one-seater and two-seater touring kayak excursions, groups will set off from Lake Mapourika and follow their guide into the neighbouring Kiwi Sanctuary using the rainforest creek system. Suitable for adults and children, this scenic 3hour excursion provides panoramic views of the Southern Alps and up to 10 different glaciers.
Morning excursions recommended for children and novice kayakers due to calmer weather.
Due to its alpine mountains and temperate rainforest, weather conditions can change dramatically with prevailing westerly winds bringing 5 metres of annual rainfall. Southern hemisphere summer months offer 17 hours of sunlight and top temperatures of 25°.
Glacier Kayaks offer courtesy transport from and back to the town.
Parental consent required for minors participating unaccompanied.
Duration and route subject to change, based on weather conditions.
