Activity description

Discover the beating heart of Abel Tasman on this wildlife watching kayak tour to Tonga Island Marine Reserve.

A marine city home to New Zealand’s iconic wildlife; travel to Tonga Island and get up close with fur seals & penguins on this guided kayaking tour. Travelling between Onetahuti and Anchorage, paddle with pods of dolphins and circle colonies packed with sunbathing seals – using the warm waters as nurseries for their pups.

Location
This activity is run & operated from Marahau and travels to Tonga Island Marine Reserve in Abel Tasman National Park. Travelling by water taxi to Onetahuti, kayak along the coastline to Anchorage- returning via water taxi.

Activity
Meet your guide at the activity base in Marahau for this wildlife watching experience in Tonga Island Marine Reserve.  Take a water taxi north to the golden expanse of Onetahuti beach – learning more about Maori legend and European history alike – and enjoying the bountiful scenery of Abel Tasman on this short transfer. Reaching the beach, receive a short safety briefing and paddle lesson before you take off to discover New Zealand fur seals (Kekeno) and little blue penguins at Tonga Island Marine Reserve. Unlike most cruises, your guide has a special permit that allows you to get close to the seals and observe them in their natural environment. Paddle south with the breeze, exploring sculptured granite headlands, tranquil lagoons and everything that’s special about the heart of the Abel Tasman – watching out for pods of curious dolphins that love to play along the nose of your kayak. During the course of this trip, you will have a chance to stop at Bark Beach for lunch and explore on foot – returning to Marahau by water taxi.

Conditions
Suitable for families and adventurous beginners alike, this kayak tour includes 4-hours of paddling at a casual pace - supported by a purpose-built kayak base, with free hot showers, free wifi, free equipment storage & client transporters. Please note: wildlife sightings cannot be guaranteed.
