Discover the Bay “Hole in the Rock” Cruise
From natural landmarks to colonial legacy, the Bay of Islands has it all. The raw beauty and natural charm of the archipelago has stayed unchanged since Captain Cook first dropped anchor over 200 years ago – offering natural lovers and history buffs a chance to discover the stunning beaches, Maori artefacts and abundant marine life that make this island chain so special.
Discover the Hole in the Rock, view dolphins and visit Otehei Bay on a premium cruise and experience the very best of what the Bay of Islands has to offer. With a Nature Guide on board, you’ll have the opportunity to learn and ask questions as you journey across the sea.
This activity is run & operated from two locations along the Bay of Islands. Guests can choose to join their cruise in Paihia or Russell (on request) for a trip along the island chain to Hole in the Rock. Choose to return to the mainland or catch a later ferry from Otehei Bay on Urupukapuka Island at your own cost.
Meet your sailing team at the meeting point in Paihia or Port Russell for this half-day cruise in the Bay of Islands. Manned by an experienced team of nature guides, get an insight into the natural history and cultural past this important island chain has had on modern New Zealand. In the safe hands of your skipper travel through the archipelago of over 140 islands – weaving through turquoise bays and lagoon-like inlets that stretch from Cape Brett to Percy Island. Home to some of the area’s most abundant wildlife, watch pods of dolphins as they play on the wake and orcas that cruise along the coastline – threading the needle as you pass through Hole in the Rock. Stopping at Otehei Bay on Urupukapuka Island for lunch, explore the island at your own pace, enjoying the walking trails, beaches and much more. If you feel like extending your adventure, you have the option of staying on the island and taking the passenger ferry back to the mainland – allowing you to hire a kayak or just sunbathe on the sand…
A discovery cruise in the Bay of Islands, itineraries are organised according to ocean conditions on the day – including travelling through Hole in the Rock that is weather/tide dependant. Sightings of marine mammals occur on 90% of trips but cannot be guaranteed.
