Step across this great frontier and meet the challenge of whitewater rafting on Queenstown’s famous Shotover River.
Experience the rugged beauty and unspoilt grandeur of the breathtaking scenery as you conquer this wild and untamed river. Tackle six rapids along the Shotover River, with stretches of calm water to take in the views, go for a swim and soak up its gold mining history.
The long and narrow grade 4-5 Mother is made up of rapids such as Aftershock, Squeeze, Toilet and Pinball. Raft through the darkness of the 170 metre Oxenbridge Tunnel and shoot the Cascade Rapid to complete the challenge.
The Shotover River is accessed by either vehicle or by helicopter to the remote rafting launch site in Skippers Canyon forged out by gold miners during the big Queenstown gold rush.
Shotover River is graded 3-5 which means it’s more exciting to raft and harder to navigate. There is a higher risk of falling out the boat. The river has more rapids than the Kawarau, including a section where you raft 170m through the Oxenbridge tunnel. You must be able to swim on this river. The road to the Shotover River is via Skippers Canyon – a narrow dirt track road that hugs the sheer cliff face of the canyon.
