Activity description

Mother Nature’s most impressive mirror effect, visit Lake Rotoiti on this evening glow worm tour.

Paddling through Rotoiti's Blue Cave, you’d be forgiven for thinking the twinkling canopy resembled the night’s sky. A constellation made up of the world’s rarest form of bioluminescence, experience this unique location at its very best, enjoying its living roof and steamy hot springs. Navigating by the southern stars, reach unmarked wonders hidden deep in the undergrowth on this glow worm & hot springs evening tour.

This activity takes place on Lake Rotoiti in Rotorua. Home to the Manupirua Thermal Springs & glow worm cave, Lake Rotoiti is only 20 minutes’ drive from the Rotorua city centre and borders Nelson Lakes National Park.

Organised under the cover of darkness, experience two of Rotorua's most popular natural features at night! After the crowds head back to the centre of town, you’ll meet your guide at the activity base for this kayak tour of Lake Rotoiti. A two-in-one experience that combines the magical wonders of the bioluminescent cave with the relaxing thermal springs of Manupirua, this excursion is great for nature lovers and curious adventurers alike –learning more about the lake’s unique geology and cultural significance. As dusk arrives on the horizon, head to the geothermal hot pools for a relaxing soak and gourmet dinner – saluting the sun with drinks and food on the banks of the Lake.  With the southern constellations shining overhead, your guide will lead you onto the lake, parting the undergrowth to reach Blue Cave. Most impressive when witnessed in total darkness, appreciate the twinkling blue bioluminescence of the glow worms and find your own horoscopes in its intricate cave roof. Re-emerge back onto the lake and meet your return transport that will take you back to Rotorua where your adventure will end.

Suitable for total beginners and children from 8 years and up, this kayaking excursion uses two-seater kayaks with spray decks. Entry to the hot pools & dinner is included. Start times are organised according to dusk and headlamps are provided as standard.
