Activity description

Tackle the ‘Big 10’ on this whitewater rafting excursion down the Rangitikei River.

One of the wildest stretches of water anywhere in the world, the Rangitikei is renowned for its 10 major whitewater sections that churn into dizzying eddies and powerful torrents down the spine of North Island. A mecca for serious playboaters and weekend enthusiasts alike, test your teamwork as you paddle down this infamous Grade V rapid run.

Location
This activity is run & operated from Taihape and travels down a 12km section of the Rangitikei River. Situated in the Rangitikei District of the North Island of New Zealand, it is a 2-hour journey from Napier/Hawkes bay, Palmerston North or Whanganui.

Activity
Meet your guide at the activity base for this half-day whitewater rafting excursion on the Rangitikei River. An iconic waterway known for its section of 10 grade V rapids, its powerful currents and crazy ravines makes it one of the best white knuckle rides in New Zealand! If you’re up for the challenge, then your guide will give you a comprehensive safety briefing before the trip – teaching you the commands and paddle techniques you’ll be using during the descent. With one lead guide per raft, you won’t be alone either, as they help steer and avoid obstacles whilst your team tackle the oncoming whitewater ahead! Over a two to three hour period, and 12 km of river, you will experience rapids that start at that easy end, and culminate in the gorge, a section of the river where 10 major rapids, from Grade 3+ to Grade 5, line up one after the other to thrill you and excite you. Some of these rapids are short and sharp, while others carry on for several hundred meters. Reaching the take out location, you can enjoy hot showers and review the action shots of your trip!

Conditions
This activity takes place on a 12km section of the Rangitikei River. A grade IV-V category, please refer to the river grading system below:
Cat IV: Intense, powerful but predictable rapids requiring precise boat handling in turbulent water.
Cat V: Long, obstructed, or very violent rapids with unavoidable waves and holes or steep, congested chutes with complex, demanding routes. Rapids may continue for long distances between pools, demanding a high level of fitness.

Enjoyable and technically challenging. But the thrill level was not as high as I was expecting, probably due to the low water levels.
