Renowned as a Dual World Heritage Site, the national park is popular all year round for Skiing, Snowboarding, Jetboating, Rafting, Kayaking and the iconic Tongariro Alpine Crossing. Cycling tours follow the world famous trout river past rolling farmland, beech forests and fern glades with spectacular views at almost every bend.
Offering two activity options for families and intermediate riders, both the Tongariro River Track and Tree Trunk Gorge are 10km long - and can be completed with or without a guide. Ranging from 2-2.5 hours, the river trail is suitable for beginners and young cyclists due to its rolling hills and easy incline. The Gorge track eaves its way through a native forest, with a short steep climb - better suited to adults and experienced riders.
Ride through ancient beech forests, alongside magnificent trout rivers and past huge volcanoes using paved roads with little traffic, backcountry dirt tracks and forest runs. Most of the Trails are clearly marked and require no guide, but you're welcome to have one accompany you if you wish. Some rides though have an experienced guide due to the complexity of the route.
