Activity description

Set sail for an ecological adventure on the crystal-blue waters of Lake Taupō! Feel the sun on your face and enjoy the gentle lake breezes as you cast-off to the Māori Rock Carvings at Mine Bay. Only zero-emission yacht tour on Lake Taupo!

You'll be skimming across the surface of crystal-clear waters as you investigate the hidden bays and beautiful coastline full of Taupo's volcanic history. Soak in the scenery before you and gaze at the distant mountain peaks rising high above the lake, guarding the Taupo Caldera as they have done for centuries.

If you are more hands-on, why not get involved? Those who want will have the chance to get involved and learn the basics of sailing and help the yacht set sail. Take the wheel or help host the sails, either way, it will be an incredible experience! If this is not your cup of tea no need to worry, just sit back, relax and enjoy the zero-emission yachts.

Sail Barbary:

Operating New Zealand’s only commercial electric yacht.

Awarded the gold medal by Tourism New Zealand for sustainability.

Sail Barbary has been sailing to the Maori Carvings in Mine Bay since 1982.

On this trip, you'll be able to experience the cultural and educational Maori Rock carvings at Mine bay and listen to old legends and their engaging tales. Stretching 14 metres above you touching the sky is the magical artistry creations of Matahi Whakataka-Brightwell with years in the making.

This world-renowned site is only accessible by boat, or by yacht if you're travelling in style. The history and significance of this site will all become clear as Sail Barbary's knowledgeable guides weave a vibrant tapestry for you through storytelling and interesting facts. Listen and become enmeshed in the story as you join the artist on a mystical journey, calling his ancestor's home.

Don’t miss out on one of New Zealand’s must-do experiences!
