Activity description

Explore the snowline on this winter hike in the Pisa Range.

Get a taste of true mountaineering on this snowshoeing overnighter in the remote Pisa Range. A white wilderness in the shadow of Mt. Aspiring, discover a part of the conservation area only accessible by helicopter – spending the night in an alpine cabin and cruising across the landscape using modern snowshoes.

This activity is run & operated from Wanaka and travels to the Pisa Conservation area by helicopter.  23,000 ha of stunning high country overlooking the Upper Clutha and Wakatipu basins, The Pisa Range is the highest of Central Otago's fault block mountains and has multiple tramping tracks accessible with snowshoes.

Meet your guide at the activity base in Wanaka for this scenic snowshoeing excursion in the Pisa Conservation Range. A bucket-list adventure where the Southern Alps take on a unique winter look, enjoy a luxury helicopter ride to altitude and overnight in a remote alpine cabin – exploring the enormous valley with the help of a mountain guide.

Day One: Check in at the office in Wanaka and drive to the airport for a helicopter ride with views of Mount Aspiring and the Southern Alps. The helicopter will drop you at the door where you can unload and explore the local hills -  settling down to a big dinner, your favourite beverage and a phenomenal sunset.

Day Two: After a late breakfast, head down the valley and into the Pisa Conservation Area.  Enjoy snow-covered valleys and rocky outcrops  - heading back down towards Wanaka if conditions allow – alternatively, a return helicopter flight can be organised.

Accommodation & Catering
All meals and sleeping equipment is included in the price of this trip. A 6 bunk dorm with basic facilities – alternatively, guests are invited to stay in the neighbouring snow cave on request.
