Activity description

Explore the lesser-known cliffs and coves of Nordland on this scenic coastal hike to Hovdsundet in Bodø.

When it comes to reaching the secluded shoreline of Hovdsundet - getting there is half the fun. Set off for a guided hike to explore the natural beauty of northern Norway and the diversity of terrain that ranges from white-sand beaches, pine forests, coastal cliffs, and pebble beaches. If you’re an experienced hiker and prefer hikes off the beaten track with rugged terrain, rocks, and beaches, this is the hike for you! The hike is challenging, but your effort is rewarded with stunning views and a real sense of rugged Norway at its best.

Location
Bodø is a coastal city in Northern Norway. Part of the traditional region of Salten, it is the capital of Nordland county - a region renowned as the last frontier before the Arctic Circle. Bodø is home to the world’s strongest maelstrom Saltstraumen and the Børvasstindan mountain range. The largest city in the county of Nordland is also just a boat ride away from both Moskenes in Lofoten and the old trading post at Kjerringøy.

Activity
This full-day guided coastal hike starts in the centre of Bodo where you will meet your guide and set off on a 6-8 hour 7 km round trip. The highlight of this challenging coastal hike is the secluded beach Hovdsundet, one of the most beautiful and remote beaches in Bodø. Hovdsundet Beach is located at the tip of a peninsula. The normal route (easiest) follows the southern half of the peninsula in both directions, which is not as challenging as the northern part. The hike to Hovdsundet Beach is perfect for those who are comfortable and experienced with backcountry hiking. This route may prove challenging for novices. Be prepared to use your entire body as the trail ascends and descends over cliffs and rocky outcrops.

Conditions
This trip is designed for experienced hikers. You must have previous hiking experience and be able to overcome rocks and rugged and uneven terrain including sandy beaches, pebble beaches, coastal cliffs, rocks and sparse pine forests. Most of the route has no rock cairns or trail markers. Most of the hike will follow the coastline (with some ups and downs). The highest point is no more than 75 metres above sea level.
