Tromsø Villmarkssenter started out as a home for dogs in 1988, since then their passion for dogs and life in nature has taken them on an exhilarating journey.

Tove Sørensen has over 20 years of experience with dog sledding and has competed 15 times in Europe’s longest dog sledding race – Finnmarksløpet. In 2006 she participated in the world's longest dog sled race in Alaska, the Iditarod.

Tromsø Villmarksenter is one of the biggest adventure companies in Norway and is located on Kvaløya (the whale island) 25 minutes from Tromsø. They have 200 Alaskan huskies and offer dog sledding trips and northern lights safaris, lasting from 4 hours to 5 days, in the winter (Nov 1st – April 30th).

In the summer (May 1st – Oct 31st) they focus on the magnificent midnight sun with kayaking, mountain hikes, glacier hikes, and excursions with their huskies. Their main focus is to offer an authentic wildlife experience for everyone. Individuals, courses, and conferences, locals, incentives, and events or groups, everybody is welcome!

Dog sledding and northern lights chase are their main activities in the winter.

Les personnes du chenil nous ont très bien accueilli et nous ont partagés leur passion. Les explications étaient très intéressantes. Très humains nous étions un petit groupe de 20 personnes, top pour discuter avec le personnel du chenil.

Excellent !

Booking the activity took forever with manawa bc trying to get a confirmation took days. For what we paid to clamp, we should have been allowed into the hut earlier. There were several trees blocking our window view and it wasn’t worth the big price we paid. The evening fish soup was terrible.

Les organisateurs étaient très gentils, ils nous ont bien expliqués la vie des chiens, les légendes des aurores boréales et venaient toujours nous parler pour savoir si tout allait bien. De plus, nous avions eu un guide en Français 🤩

The centre is a twenty-five minute bus ride from Trsø. It is well organised and provides boots and warm overalls for those who would like to use them. Our sled was driven by a friendly young lady, who introduced us to each of the huskies pulling us by name and told us something about each animal. She obviously was very involved in their everyday care and loved the dogs very much. She was very willing to take photos if us in the sled and with the huskies.

Instructors were very friendly and clearly good at their job. They were really good at making sure that we were dressed appropriately with boots, suit and goggles. It was so nice that they looked after you even after the driving had finished, making sure that we had enough to eat and drink. I really enjoyed the meet the dogs experience afterwards. Our guide Leo was so knowledgeable about the breed and answered our million questions really well.

  • 5 / 5

They were extremely knowledgeable and passionate about their jobs. The fact that they can remember the names of 300 dogs is a testament to their dedication!

Helpful, friendly, interesting and very well organised

Well organized

There are several dog-sledding experiences, but this one is clearly the best. The dogs are clearly loved, well-trained, and well-cared for by staff who stay on the premises. You'll learn so much about what makes a good team as the owner of the facility is also a competitive racer who has dedicated herself to the sport. The activity was also immaculately organized. We never wondered where we were going or doing for a moment. Truly, the highlight of our trip.
