Don’t miss the chance to explore Europe’s highest active volcano, by hiking to the summit of Crater Montagnola at 2,640 m above sea level. Crater Montagnola was generated by the explosive eruption back in 1763 and represents one of the most beautiful and interesting spots on the eastern side of Mount Etna. Get ready for the most exciting hike around Mount Etna!
Starting from Piazzale Rifugio Sapienza at 1,900m above sea level, you will begin your ascent along a trail that will take you to the summit of Montagnola at 2,640m. Your guide will lead you through the trail and walk you to the summit of Crater Montagnola. Feel free to ask any questions about the geological origin of the crater. Once at the summit of Crater Montagnola, you will experience a spectacular view. Take your time to relax and fully embrace this iconic moment at the top of the crater. Enjoy the rewarding panoramic views from the hilltop village of Taormina to the Gulf of Catania and from the Valle del Bove to the summit craters. Don’t forget to take pictures!
As you make your descent on a downward slope, you’ll get to run and jump down the black lava sand of Mount Etna. As you descend, you will see other craters of Mount Etna and learn about the most recent eruptions. Don’t be surprised if your face is fully covered in ashes; take it as a sweet memory from this unique hiking excursion.
