Sicilia in Bici has pedaled all over the Italian island of Sicily, that's why they know the best mountain biking routes. They have chosen two of the best trails for beginners so you can have your first contact with the amazing thrill of pedaling on various landscapes with the mighty Mount Etna looking over.
These mountain bike routes will take you on a 2 to 3-hour adrenaline-inducing trip in which you'll not only experience mountain biking but also the amazing beauty of the island.
The Buccheri route will start at Le Case di Sant’Andrea, a farmhouse that also serves as a BnB. You'll ride across the valley and through a small stream on a forestial path. This trail leads up to Mount. St. Venere (870 m.) and it will require you to go uphill. It may be a bit challenging, but once you've reached the top you'll enjoy an astonishing view of Mount Etna!
Then, the route becomes turns into a downhill experience, you'll descend on a dirt road onto the regional road SR5, from Pedagaggi (329 m.) to Ferla (556 m.). You'll see many wind turbines harvesting the wind's force and transforming it into electricity. Then, you'll get off the SR5 and onto the provincial road SP29 towards Buccheri. After riding a few kilometers, you'll leave the forest track and get on a pure adrenaline-inducing and slightly technical downhill until reaching the starting point.
A second option, the lava caves route, will take you to Mount Etna's northern side. Your tour will start at Rifugio Brunek, on the Mareneve provincial road. Then, you'll ride downhill for about 100 meters until joining a dirt path. After leaving the pine wood, you'll reach Mount Corruccio's lava cave. You'll get to take a break from the bike visit the cave and take a couple of pictures.
Then, you'll hit the road again, at that point you'll have to go downhill. You'll leave the woods and arrive to a completely different landscape. The rocky volcanic landscape will seem lunar-like. You'll continue through this lunar landscape until you reach Vallebionda. The most challenging part of the route starts there, an 8 km. long climb will challenge you before rewarding you will amazing views from Rifugio Timpa Rossa (a hut at 1,386 m.). On your ride up, you'll make a small detour to Grotta delle Palombe to visit an old pagghiaru (a shelter built by shepherds), Grotta delle Femmine, and Grotta dei Lamponi. The way back from Timpa Rossa hut will be downhill towards Rifugio Brunek.
All participants must be in good health. Minors must have authorization from their parents.
