Activity description

Explore the protected waters of Kabeljouws Nature Reserve on this kayaking excursion in Jeffreys Bay.

Close to the neighbouring Noorsekloof nature reserve, this lesser known haven in Jeffreys Bay – the Kabeljous is a sanctuary for the area’s iconic flamingos – making it one of the best places for wildlife watching. Tour this seasonal lagoon on a kayak excursion along the banks of the biosphere.

Location
This activity takes place on the banks of the Kabeljous Lagoon in Jeffrey’s Bay. Bordered on both sides by nature reserves and rivers – the Kabeljous and Seekoei estuaries are protected from the open ocean – making it popular for kitesurfing and kayaking.

Activity
Meet your guide at the activity base for this kayaking excursion on Kabeljouws Lagoon. Suitable for groups of friends and families alike, this tour is set to a leisurely pace – with a focus on wildlife watching. Starting out with a quick safety briefing and kit breakdown, beginners will learn about the strokes and paddle techniques they’ll need to navigate the lagoon – choosing from either a single or double seater kayak. A two-hour tour, the area offers beautiful views of the nature reserve and is home to an array of wildlife which includes grysbok, bushbuck, mongoose, caracal, duiker, bush pig and approximately 100 bird species-  and the iconic pink flamingo! During the trip, your guide will tell you more about the biodiversity of the Eastern Cape and why the lagoon is important to the area’s natural diversity. After exploring the lagoon, you will return to the activity base where your adventure will end.

Conditions
Using traditional touring kayaks, guests can choose to share or paddle their own kayak – with a maximum of two adults and one small child per kayak. The lagoon is protected from the ocean and wind –making it one of the calmest flat water spots on the cape.
