Surfing Lessons in Big Bay near Cape Town

Cape Town has an abundance of surf spots along its coast, from coves with small, gentle swells, to expansive beaches boasting big, bone-crunching waves. Surf Life operates in Big Bay.

Each surf spot has certain conditions that make it an ideal choice (this is largely related to wind direction). Big Bay is popular with surfers of any level. It’s about a 30-minute drive from the city centre, and is best on a day when an east to south-east wind is blowing. The spot is known for its friendly locals, and has a cosy coffee shop across the park for an after-surf pick-me-up.  

Here’s what you will learn in the surf lessons:
You'll start on the beach where you'll learn the fundamentals of surfing before hitting the waves. You'll be taught how to position yourself on the board and paddle techniques. Your instructor will also observe you to see if your stance is natural or “goofy foot” and will advise you on how to get yourself standing comfortably on the board.

After that you'll go hunting for some waves firstly paddling out, turning around and paddle in the direction of the shore, timing your entry so you're one with the wave. You'll practice the ‘pop up’ on the board, foot positioning and balance all with the watchful eye of an experienced guide.
