Activity description

Join Ocean Blue Adventures on board the Blue Flag accredited boat for a specialised and information-rich whale watching experience. A great activity for everyone who visits South Africa and wishes to encounter these magnificent ocean creatures.

From June to November the instructors will reveal the beauty of Plettenberg bay while making sure to show you the best of these marine mammals. Sit back while having a refreshing drink on board and enjoy the whale watching tour.

The knowledgeable guides and skippers will treat you to close encounters with some of the whales that visit the shores during the months of June to November. You could be graced with sightings of the Southern Right Whale in the Bay or Humpback Whales travelling along the coastline.

You may experience the joy of seeing them breach or even view a mother and calf as they enjoy the safety the bay offers. You will also have the chance to take a closer look to a vast seal colony and the many pelagic and coastal birds.

Offer Description

- 2 Hours of boat tour to get a close encounter with the whales

- All tours and marine mammals are conducted strictly according to current regulations and conservation guidelines

Course of events

The Ecological boat tour leaves from the Central Beach with an exciting beach launch and heads east past the bird sanctuary and Keurbooms beach to Arch Rock.

There you usually encounter Bottlenose and the rare Indo-Pacific Humpback dolphins, as well as some shark species.

From Arch Rock you will head into the middle of the Bay where pelagic seabirds are normally to be found some 7km from the shore. Out there the resident Bryde’s whales may be seen, as well as Common dolphins or Southern Right and Humpback whales during their season.

You will then traverse the Bay to the point of Robberg Peninsula and out to the Wild side, often seeing groups of whales and pods of dolphins.

Cruising back along the inside of Robberg, you will see the unique geology from this unusual viewpoint and can observe the growing Cape Fur Seal Colony.

Finally you will head back along the Robberg beach, while a brief rundown on the history of the area is given.

After passing the Beacon Island Hotel, built on the site of an original Whaling Station, the tour ends to the Central Beach.

Nice trip. Did not see a lot of whales though. We had fun and the guide was fun. Booking was a bit odd. We choose 08:30 and got a different time slot but that did not show in the email. We could not call them.
