See the largest breeding colony of African penguins in the world and learn about important conservation efforts in this scenic and educational day trip in Algoa bay!
Watch these funny birds in their natural habitat as they slip and slide in and out of the water. They will show off their amazing underwater adaptations just for you! During this cruise, you will likely also catch sight of bottlenose, common and humpback dolphins, southern right, humpback and Bryde's whales, cape fur seals, sharks, and various seabirds.
This bay has lost 70% of its African penguins in the last 10 years. Now endangered, this tour provides a unique opportunity to admire these beautiful creatures and learn about the cause of their decline. After the cruise, you will enjoy a delicious lunch of fresh seafood dishes (other options available) in the Port Elizabeth Harbour.
The second part of the day is a visit to Port Elizabeth’s marine bird rehabilitation, SANCCOB, and education center situated in the Cape Recife Nature Reserve. You will take a tour of the center and experience nature through sight, sound, and touch. In the hospital, you will see volunteers in action helping to save our environment, in particular, the endangered African Penguin.
A shuttle bus will then pick you up to be taken to your final activity, Bayworld. Bayworld has set up a captive breeding program for the penguins, who are rescued but unfortunately cannot be released. You can enjoy spectacular marine displays in the rest of the oceanarium, including turtles and various fishes. After touring the museum you can either be taken back to the harbour or transportation can be arranged to take you straight back to your accommodation!
