Activity description

These rafting adventures are one of the more popular outdoor adventure activities in South Africa. Umkulu Adventures have been actively involved in conducting river rafting adventures on the Orange River for the past 16 years.

The rafting trail will take you from the base camp through the Nababeep Community and Richtersveld Community Reserve. Over the course of the tour, you'll experience spectacular mountain views, fast flowing channels and excellent bird life.

The river is graded at level 1 - 3 in difficulty and is suitable for beginners. The Orange River is a pool drop river, which means after every rapid, there is always a pool.

The Richtersveld is home to goat herders, who trek through the endless desert mountains. There are no designated campsites; the camp for the overnight stay will be chosen depending on the progress made on the day.

These tours are truly great combination of rafting, relaxing, hiking and exploring. It is not a race, but rather an outdoor expedition suitable for all with no experience. The guides will be preparing meals on open fires and ensuring you make your way safely down the Orange River.

We enjoyed the adventure but felt that the canoeing went on for far too long. I was paddling with two young boys and it was very tiring which spoiled the experience a bit for us.
