Activity description
Embark on an adventure through one of Europe's most easily accessible and captivating canyon systems with half-day excursions to Viamala Gorge in Thusis.
Steeped in myth and legend, the Viamala Gorge offers more than just an adrenaline rush. With a history dating back to ancient times, this 'bad path' once connected Alpine travellers from Spluegen to San Bernardino. Today, it stands as a testament to nature's grandeur, showcasing breathtaking landscapes and ancient cult sites that speak volumes about its past.
Thusis, nestled at the northern entrance of Viamala Gorge on the Hinterrhein River, serves as the gateway to this natural wonder. The town in Graubünden also marks the starting point of the Albula Railway, a popular route for excursions to Heinzerberg and Domleschg. Situated between Thusis and Andeer, the Viamala Gorge boasts 300-meter-high sheer cliffs, a 359-step staircase leading to the canyon center, millennia-old swirl potholes, and spectacular bridge constructions spanning treacherous waters.
Embark on a four-hour canyoning adventure through Viamala Gorge. This accessible yet challenging course is ideal for adventurous beginners, requiring no rope work and accessible from the road. Meet your guide at the Migros car park in Thusis, a short 5-minute walk from the entry point of the gorge. After gearing up, descend the ancient steps into the ravine, where you'll receive comprehensive safety instructions and learn various canyoning techniques. Navigate toboggans, scale canyon walls, and plunge into fast-flowing waters. Conclude your journey with complimentary refreshments to celebrate your triumph!
