Explore the Smuggler’s Route on this XC downhill MTB tour in Doi Suthep National Park.
A paradise for the XC nomad, explore tropical cross-country trails in the uplands of Doi Suthep National Park. An untamed environment with a unique ecology, travel from the very highest peak in the park and follow the old Smuggler Route 35km via forgotten mountain trails and high altitude plantations to Lake Huay Tueng Tao at the base of Doi Pui Mountain.
Considered the MTB capital of Thailand, Doi Suthep National Park in the Chiang Mai province of Northern Thailand is home to Wat Phra That Doi Suthep Buddhist temple Mok Fa Waterfall. A 265 km² area, this trail follows a 35km downhill mixed terrain route through dense rainforest, traditional villages and local landmarks.
Meet your guide at the activity base in Chiang Mai for this full day XC MTB tour in Doi Suthep National Park. A challenging cross-country trail for intermediate riders, your adventure starts with a 45-minute 4x4 transfer to the top of Doi Pui Mountain 5400 feet (1646m) above the Palace and Doi Suthep Temple. After viewing Doi Pui Village and preparing your bikes, you will send off on a short ride through a plantation for a cup of locally brewed coffee. This first part of the trip helps you to evaluate your riding ability and learn some new techniques from the lead guide. A 4-hour descent with fantastic forest riding, mountain passes and steep hills, you will wind across the valley – riding out of the saddle as you race downhill between plantations and forest with beautiful pine trees changing to eucalyptus growth on the way down to the Mae Ping Valley floor. A secluded and technical route with wild and dramatic vistas, Once you reach the lake, you can strip off for a swim and enjoy a light lunch overlooking this stunning vista. Your transport will be waiting to take you back to Chiang Mai where your adventure will end.
Suitable for competent MTB enthusiasts, this downhill route is considered intermediate – following a mixed terrain track on a specially adapted cross country front suspension/hydraulic disc mountain bike. Most gradients are moderate but may include short steep sections and include small Technical Trail Features (TTFs).
