Discover the bumps and bends of the Mae Taeng River on this whitewater rafting excursion near Chiang Mai.
Go with the flow as you track the mighty Mae Taeng from source to sea on this grade III river in the heart of the Thai uplands. A wet and wild adventure through the lush jungle, hold on to your paddles as you plunge down rapids, dodge huge obstructions and even slow down for a chance to meet the area’s local elephants as they take an afternoon bath. The best way to experience parts of Chiang Mai most tourists miss, embrace the thrill on this whitewater rafting excursion down the infamous Mae Taeng river.
The Mae Taeng river is a tributary of the Ping River that starts in the uplands of Chiang Mai. Surrounded by untamed jungle, elephant sanctuaries and protected national parks like Chiang Dao, it is a popular river for white water rafting due to its grade III rapids suitable for beginners and more technical paddlers.
Meet your instructor at the activity base for the white water rafting adventure on the Mae Taeng. A half-day excursion through the region’s jungle uplands and sweeping valleys that starts in Amphoe Mae Taeng about 60 km from town (2 hour drive), this 10km course navigates some of the river’s most exciting grade III rapids. Starting with a quick safety briefing and kit check, each raft is manned by a lead guide who will teach you the paddle strokes before you set off into the rapids. Working together to avoid obstacles and tackle fast flowing white water, paddle through the bends and bumps – enjoying the natural slides and collision course obstacles, maybe even seeing a passing pachyderm as they cool off in the river channels along the way. After completing the course, you’ll get the chance to towel off and enjoy the scenery before your return back to base camp.
The Mae Taeng River is classed grade III-IV depending on the season. July – January is considered to be the best time to raft on the river, whilst March-June is the dry season with a lower water table and fewer rapids. The total duration on the river is 2 hours on a 10km section of the waterway (season depending).
Rapids are classified accordingly:
Class II: Straightforward rapids with wide, clear channels and medium-sized waves.
Class III: Rapids with moderate, irregular waves, fast currents and strong eddies.
Class IV: Intense, powerful but predictable rapids requiring precise boat handling.
