Conquer the currents of the Mae Taeng River with rafting excursions near Chiang Mai.
A deep rumble through the jungle signals the location of northern Thailand’s most renowned river. Explore its bumps, bends and heart racing rapids on this 10km challenge down the mighty Mae Taeng.
The Mae Taeng River flows through Northern Thailand and the ancient Lana Kingdom of Chiang Mai – home to over 300 temples. A grade III-IV river deep in the highlands and jungle in the Mae Sa Valley, the area is renowned for its action sports and elephant sanctuaries.
Meet your guide in Chiang Mai for this whitewater rafting trip on the Mae Taeng river. Driving out into the dense jungle, you will start your excursion on the banks of the river with a short safety briefing and kit check. Suited to all ages and abilities, each raft is manned by a lead guide who will teach you a few commands and paddle techniques before you set off. A full day adventure that navigates 10km of fast flowing grade III-IV rapids, be prepared to get wet as you tackle raging currents, swirling eddies, natural drops and big obstructions - following the river through untouched wilderness and past quaint rural hill tribe villages. Once you reach the end, your transport will be waiting to take you back to Chiang Mai where your adventure will end.
Rafting on the Mae Taeng River operates during the rainy season (July – March) when the river swells and creates grade III-IV rapids in the uplands of Chiang Mai. River grading explained as below.
Class III: Rapids with moderate, irregular waves, strong eddies and fast currents
Class IV: Intense, powerful but predictable rapids requiring precise boat handling in turbulent water.
