Impress the locals with beginner’s surfing lessons at Howell Bay in Newquay
One of Britain’s best beaches, learn how to master your standing series and enjoy a few hours paddling around in the white water as you get to discover a new sport in one of the area’s proud National Trust locations. A rite of passage when heading to the UK’s favourite surfing destination, this sheltered bay is the perfect place to work on your take off without worrying about big swells or summer tourists.
Location
Howell Bay is a National Trust protected beach in Newquay. This huge beach of golden sand backed by grass-tufted dunes is a perfect example of the north coast’s wide open bays. The activity centre is situated at Park Dean Caravan Park with access to changing rooms, showers and free parking. Three miles west-southwest of Newquay, you can reach Howell Bay by car, mainline train and bus. The area is served by a small regional airport 25 mins drive from the city centre.
Activity
Meet your instructor at the activity base on Howell Beach for a beginner’s surfing lesson. Start off by kitting up with a wetsuit and your own board before walking down to the beach. Warm up with a few group activities before your instructor shows you the all-important standing series – a takeoff routine you’ll be using in the water. Staying in chest height surf, you’ll paddle out and start taking small whitewater – working with your coach to get you riding in waves before you know it! You can choose either a half day or full day lesson, depending on how much time you have to spare.
Conditions
Holywell Beach is a lesser-surfed beach break suited to beginners and intermediates due to its shallow bay and smooth whitewater. Thanks to its sheltered location, it has pretty consistent surf and can work at any time of the year.
