Activity description

See the other side to life in the Vietnam countryside on this 3-day MTB tour in Mai Chau.

Remote, challenging but always worth the reward, lesser know Mai Chau is an area renowned for its single track paths, undulating rough jeep trails and steep climbs. The ride passes through traditional villages, across lush rice paddies and above a valley for stunning views. Get to know the local hill tribe people - the White Tai - and their culture better with an overnight experience in a homestay.

Location
Mai Châu is a rural district in the Northwest region of Vietnam, 2 hours from central Hanoi. Renowned for its agriculture and unique White Tai villages, local landmarks include Pù Luông Nature Reserve, Đèo Thung Khe and the Misty Mountain pass.

Activity
A 75km off-road experience in Mai Chau, this 3-day/ 2-night MTB tour is mostly on off-road tracks, that vary from hard packed jeep roads to single-track. This is a moderately challenging mountain bike trip with climbs to stunning views and spectacular descents – staying locally in traditional Vietnamese homestays.

Day 1: Meet your guide in Hanoi and drive to Poom Coong village. Warm up with an MTB trail through White Tai villages and enjoy a home-cooked lunch in a traditional house. Cycle to Cun Pheo on a mix of good single track paths and undulating rough jeep trails – passing hot springs and cycling across suspension bridges. Follow the contours around beautiful terraced rice fields and overnight in local village homestay at Buoc village.

Day 2: After breakfast, enjoy biking on rolling terrain, climbing uphill and rising above the valley. Remote and challenging, cruise downhill to Mai Chau on a 35km loop. The tracks will vary from hard packed dirt roads to single track, with a few challenging rocky sections thrown in for variety. Spend a night overlooking the rice padding in rural Mai Chau.

Day 3: Visit a local temple on your scenic route back to central Mai Chau, past green rice paddies and local villages, meeting the friendly local villagers. Arrive back in Lac village in time for lunch in a local homestay. Have some time to explore before a 2-hour transfer to Hanoi, arriving late afternoon.

Conditions
This trip is suitable for people who are fit, have previous off-road experience, and enjoy a mountain bike challenge in a beautiful environment. Bike hire is included in the tour. The bikes are engineered with lightweight alloy frames, 24- to 27-speed gearing, v-brakes and Shimano components and front suspension.
