George: What to do when you get there ?

George is well-known for its world-class golf courses, many of which were designed by famous golfers, amongst these are Oubaai and Le Grande George. However, recent years have seen the city, located in Western Cape, transform into an ultra-popular holiday spot. It has become an activity hub for extreme sports fanatics and is often used as a base to explore Tsitsikamma National Park.

Home to the exceedingly famous Garden Route, which is the largest continuous natural forest area in South Africa, covering some 650 km², you can find George in the middle of Cape Town and Port Elizabeth. It is situated on a 10-kilometer plateau between the Outeniqua Mountains to the north and the Indian Ocean to the south.

With temperatures that range between 25 to 19 degrees (on average) all year round, it’s not surprising that George has become a trendy destination, that offers an abundance of extreme sports and open air activities. What’s the point of being cooped up indoors when the outdoors has absolutely everything you need!

Canyoning often referred to as kloofing in South Africa has recently increased in popularity and in George, you’ll find the Cappuccino Canyon, locally known as Kaaimans Kloof. This gorge is a great way for beginners to find out more about this exhilarating activity that combines, jumping, swimming, abseiling and sometimes even ziplining.

Fans of abseiling have to try the 45 metre abseil down the magnificent Swart River waterfall. What makes this activity unique is the fact that you land in canoe at the bottom of the waterfall – don’t worry you won’t get wet!

Want to become one with the water? Then rent a canoe and venture out in the wonderful South African waters. Touw River flows through an indigenous forest that has an abundance of birdlife for you to marvel at as you paddle through. Island Lake is an excellent option for those of you who want to paddle to the beach and take a break on the sumptuous white sand. The pride and joy of the Kaaimans River is a lovely waterfall that you can paddle to. Once at the waterfall, you can opt to abseil down it adding to your dose of thrills.

We had an amazing time abseiling with Eden Adventures. Our guides, Steve and Sid, really made the experience the most memorable and enjoyable. We were lucky to get a good group of other abseilers who were friendly and encouraging, and all equally inexperienced and cautious. However, Steve does a really wonderful job of coaching each participant down the rock face, and not making anyone feel the least bit rushed or pressured. He also was very funny and kept cracking jokes, which made everything better! We would 100% do it again, and look forward to trying the Kloofing Tour with Eden Adventures the next time we are in wilderness.
