Welcome to the Mecca of kitesurfing, also known as Langebaan! This exciting city is located in the Western Cape province of South Africa, on the eastern shore of Langebaan Lagoon, making it a top spot not only for kitesurfing, but also for sailing and kayaking.
One of the main attractions of Langebaan is that it’s away from the touristic crowds, but has everything you need to have an excellent holiday. It’s also probably THE best kitesurfing spot in South Africa for those of you who want to learn.
Often referred to as the ‘jewel of the west coast’, Langebaan boasts sumptuous white sand beaches and turquoise coloured flat waters that stretch 17 km. It can be found 120 km north of Cape Town, making it a great pit stop for those of you who want to ride its glorious waters. The wind blows cross-shore and you can kitesurf here all year round, although the best wind season is from October through to April.
The top kitesurfing spots in the bay are Pearly’s Beach, Cape Sports Bay and Shark Bay. Rest assured that despite its name, there are no sharks in these waters and the water is very shallow, making it ideal for beginners. Overall, these top kitesurfing spots are great for those of you who want to do freestyle riding, but also those of you who want to get a taste of this thrilling sport.
10 km south of Langebaan is a haven for bird watchers and naturalists. You can visit the park to observe over 300 species of birds found in the lagoon waters of the West Coast National Park. The park is most busy during the spring flower season from August to September, when the wild flowers are in bloom. Exotic animal lovers need to make their way to the park during October and November to spot the whales.
