Faial: What to do when you get there ?

The first Portuguese sailors called Faial Island with the name of “Sao Luiz”. According to legends, Faial island was originally inhabited by a hermit who sought refuge from the world, only later 15 Flemish countrymen land in the island.

Faial Island, also known as Fayal is a Portuguese island of the Central Group of the Azores, an archipelagos of nine volcanic islands in the North Atlantic Ocean about 1,360 km (850 mi) west of continental Portugal. You can reach the island by plane from Lisbon and Horta airport.

Faial Island boasts an uncontaminated environment composed of green landscapes and blue crystal sea. The Capelinhos Volcano is the westernmost point of the island and you can reach its summit by trekking or mountain biking. Faial island offers several miles of trails that run through the mountainous backcountry and the coast, which guarantee unforgettable mountain biking and trekking excursions. There are also several circuits for downhill mountain biking, 4x4 jeep and kart-cross: let the adrenaline flow!

The connection between the island and the sea remains strong: here you will be able to do some whale watching, swim with dolphins, scuba diving and boat trips. It is also possible to explore the channels between the islands by kayaking.

Among the other activities that you can practice on the island: sailing, windsurfing and surfing.
