Dubrovnik: What to do when you get there ?

Nicknamed the ‘Pearl of the Adriatic,’ this coastal city truly is a gem of a destination. Boasting not only a UNESCO World Heritage Old Town, world-famous stone city walls and a stunning location on the beautiful blue waters of the region, but also an abundance of adventure sports, for when you’re after a change of pace from sight-seeing.

Dubrovnik's Cultural Treasures

Top of most visitors’ to-do lists for this destination is a peaceful wander around the stunning stone landmarks of the Old Town, for some historical sightseeing. This area is known worldwide for its distinctive orange tiled rooftops and landmarks such as Pile Gate, the main entrance to the Old Town and Minčeta Tower, a 14th century fortress, which featured in Game of Thrones.

Other notable sights that this Old Town has to offer are the magnificent 16th century Renaissance and Gothic style Sponza Palace, the reconstructed baroque Rector’s Palace and the Dubrovnik Clock Tower. This area is also home to the Old Port, a great place to relax after some summer sightseeing, on the terrace of a local café or restaurant.

Dubrovnik's Popular Beaches

Dubrovnik is a treasure-trove of charming pebble beaches, making it a great destination for a city and sea break or a family holiday.

Banje Beach, just a stone's throw away from the Old Town, offers a fantastic view of the Old Port as well as offering opportunities for water activities such as jetskiing and parasailing - providing great ways to discover the Old Town an Dubrovnik's Old Port from the sea.

Lapad Bay Beach, is a lovely pebble beach which whilst still popular, is further away from the hustle and bustle of the Old Town. It is also a great place for water sports.

But there are many more: the hidden rocky Danče beach is a well-kept secret, and is just a 10 minute walk from Dubrovnik's Old Town. Sveti Jakov, a little further, offers beautiful scenery, crystal-clear waters and with far less crowds compared to Banje. And don't forget Plat, Mlini beach, Srebreno Beach...

Different ways to visit and enjoy Dubrovnik

A scenic coastal city steeped in culture, many visit to see its fortresses, towers and churches that have influenced popular culture, and take a rest on the city's many beaches. Yet Dubrovnik is a very touristic destination, and can get crowded in the Summer time.

For a more relaxing way to see Dubrovnik, opt for one of the many sea-kayaking tours available. Sea-Kayaking around this area offers unique views of the Old Town, Old Port and the natural surroundings of Dubrovnik and enables you to access tiny coves and/or visit Lokrum island.

Besides sea kayaking, Dubrovnik offers several options for the traveller looking for a different experience. For great views of these beaches, and of the Old Town, head up Mount Srđ, a hill overlooking the city for panoramic views, accessible by a four minute cable car ride or an approximately one hour hike. Dubrovnik's rugged coastline and nearby islets offer many other great places to hike, such as on Koločep.

Free diving, ziplining, and coastal rock climbing, are all a great way to experience this beautiful fortified city and its stunning natural location, whilst staying away from the masses.

The around Lokrum trip is just about long enough. We wouldn’t recommend the short version. The visits to the caves were nice. We liked the stories of the instructors in which they explained a bit about the surroundings and the history.

Incredible! This was super fun, even with a few restrictions on the jet ski for safety reasons. We went 30 knots top speed with our guide and went around two islands and had time to go swimming. We manage to pass a large ferry and use the ways as ramps to go in the air!

Great activity, such a different way to see the city as opposed to just walking the city walls, I would strongly recommend.
