Northern Velebit National Park: What to do when you get there?

The Northern Velebit National Park, located in northwestern Croatia, is part of the Velebit mountain range which was declared biosphere reserve by the UNESCO. Nature lovers will definitely fall in love with its wonderful landscapes, its rich fauna and flora.

With an area of 109 km², the park includes Zavižan mountain which peaks at 1,676 metres and is part of the Velebit mountain range, which is the biggest mountain range in Croatia.

In the heart of the national park, you can discover the botanical garden and the Hajdučki kukobi & Rožanski natural reserves. Gaze at the numerous plant and flower endemic species and explore some of the 150 caves. Luka's cave is the deepest cave in Eastern Europe with a depth of 1,400 metres.

The best way to admire these stunning landscapes is to go on a hiking excursion. Several hiking trails will allow you to follow the different montains. Don't miss the Premuzic hiking trail which is the most popular in the park. On your way, you can also have a break in one of the mountain chalets.

The Northern Velebit National Park is home to some animals living in the mountains such as brown bears, wolves, lynx, red and roe deers, Ural owls, and even western capercaillies. You will maybe have the chance to observe them on an exciting jeep safari!
