Since 1994, the city has been hosting the Samsung Galaxy Championship Tour organised by the World Surf League that promotes the best surfers from across the globe. During the first fortnight of October, the city transforms into a surfing temple. Hossegor has the best beach-breaks in Europe and maybe even the world, thanks to its sandbanks such as Culs Nus and Gravière. These sandbanks are reputed for their round, hollow waves that offer a wide space in the tube. Biscaye Bay has numerous long swells all year round.

In winter the size of the swell that hits the bay is impressive. In the north of Hossegor you can find swells that reach a huge 5 metres!
