Martigues: What to do when you get there?

Martigues, nicknamed "the Venice of Provence", is a southeastern French town located near the Mediterranean Sea and only 40 minutes from Marseille. Situated on the banks of the Étang de Berre, the town offers unlimited possibilities for water sports aficionados.

Inhabited since the Prehistory, Martigues is a town where you can discover some historical sites. Its main attraction is the Fort de Bouc and its lightouse located on the ancient islet of the Bouc. Also known under the names "Caserne Suffren de Martigues" and "fort Vauban", this fort was built in the 12th century. It is situated at the entry of the canal of Caronte that links the Berre lagoon to the Mediterranean Sea.

The Étang de Berre is a very popular spot in Martigues. The lagoon and its surroundings host more than 250 sedentary and migratory bird species. Its windy and sunny climate are ideal to practice nautical sports in complete safety.

Some sailing schools in Martigues are members of the French Sailing Federation and provide sailing courses such as catamaran and funboarding. Some of them even organize regatta, a great opportunity for adrenaline hunters!

You can also practice other fun sports and outdoor activities on the Étang de Berre like jet skiing, flyboarding, rowing or canoeing-kayaking.

Thanks to its perfect location near the Mediterranean Sea, you can as well explore the subaquatic world during an adventure dive. Take a plunge into one of the different scuba diving spots (Phare de la couronne, Caro-La Barge, etc.) and discover the incredible fauna and flora!

Martigues is a charming town located on the French Riviera where you can enjoy many different water sports.
