Mount Canigou: What to do when you get there?

The Canigou is the sacred mountain of the Catalans, full of legends and mysteries. The 2784 metres give splendid and majestic views of Roussillon and the Mediterranean Sea.

Located near Prades, the impressive massif is even more imposing when the snow silhouettes the mountain, holding magnificent views.

It is a place very much appreciated by trekkers, mountaineers and hikers. From June to September you’ll see thousands of mountain lovers climbing up the peak of Canigou.

To reach this striking mountain of the Eastern Pyrenees, trekkers and hikers have two starting points: from the cabin Cortalets, to 2150 meters (3½ hours round trip) or from the shelter Mariailles, to 1718 meters (8 hours round trip).

At the top, the outstanding panoramas of the Pyrenees, the views of Roussillon and the Mediterranean coast reward all the efforts of its climbers.

The first Sunday of August is celebrated here the famous and difficult “Carrera del Canigó”, a mountain race of 34 kilometres round trip between Vernet-les-Bains and the peak. The total altitude reached goes up to 2180 meters!
