Ria Formosa: What to do when you get there?

The Ria Formosa is located in the Algarve region, southern Portugal. It consists in a lagoon with a system of barrier islands stretching over 60 km. The major part of the Ria Formosa is a protected Natural Reserve since 1978 and it also became a Natural Park in 1987.

The Ria Formosa Natural Park is home to a rich biodiversity where you will find numerous endemic plant species. It is also one of the last places in Europe to welcome birds from Northern and Central Europe during the wintering and nesting periods.

If you are a nature lover, you will be able to gaze at over 30 000 different birds, but also at the western swamphen which is the park's symbol, the common chameleon and numerous sea fishes that breed in the Ria Formosa.

There are two hiking trails where you can discover the fauna and flora of the park. One is at the Marim Environmental Education Centre. On a 3 km circular trail, you will stroll through various landscapes like sand dunes, salt marshes and pine forests. The other hiking trail is a 3 km round trip starting at the parking of Quinta do Lago beach. This is where you will have the opportunity to contemplate pink flamingos, as well as freshwater lakes.

Kitesurfing is one of the most popular sport in Portugal. The beaches in the Ria Formosa Natural Park are a true haven for kitesurfers.

Kite Culture Algarve is a kiteboarding school with an IKO-certified expert team. The experimented instructors will lead you to the wonderful lagoons, beaches and islands in order to offer you many kiteboarding possibilities. You'll find an excellent range of kiteboards and kites, giving you many opportunities to try it out and appreciate the different styles as you progress through your kitesurf course.
