Stockholm: What to do when you get there?

When hearing the word Stockholm, the majority of people think polished Scandinavian interior design, house music and sub-zero temperatures. Stockholm is certainly those things, but the enlightened know it is SO much more than that!

Stockholm's old town

Your first stop in Stockholm will likely be to visit the old town, also known as Gamla Stan. Since Stockholm was first built in 1252, many of the buildings here are over 800 years old. Despite being old, they are perfectly preserved and beautiful. The architecture you’ll see in Stockholm is distinctly Scandinavian in style, painted in various colours of orange with pointed steeples surrounded by lush forestry.

Stockholm, a water city

Stockholm city is a collection of islands - 14 islands to be exact, connected by over 50 bridges. This makes Stockholm a city with water everywhere! The water not only creates beautiful picturesque sunset reflections of the city and sky, but is also an ideal place to swim, sea kayak, ice skate, or go speed boating. If you partake in any of these activities, you’re likely to be mistaken for an actual Swede; it’s what they themselves do for fun, too!

The city of Nobel prizes

You have likely heard of the Nobel Peace Prize- and Stockholm is its birthplace! Alfred Nobel was a Swedish man who made a fortune after his invention of dynamite. He left the equivalent of 179 million euros to be spent rewarding those who have contributed greatly to the betterment of society. Today, the Nobel Peace prize is awarded to only the greatest and most benevolent of minds. In Stockholm city, you can visit the Nobel Prize Museum, where you can learn more about the history, those that have been awarded, and more.
