Located in the most northern point of France, the historic city of Dunkirk was originally a fishing village which has recently dramatically changed into a kitesurfer’s and windsurfer’s paradise.

This northern town has become a hot spot for wind sports fans and is exceptionally popular with the French, Brits and Belgians alike, which is why most kitesurfing and windsurfing schools provide lessons in English, French and sometimes even Flemish.

The 150 kilometre coastline is home to the first kite surfing park in Europe, optimally situated as the winds blow in all directions all year round. Not only that but there is a specific area indicating take-off and landing points for kitesurfers.

Less than an hour away from Dunkirk you have the fantastic Opal Coast that boasts 9 excellent wind sports spots; Bray-Dunes, Dunkirk, Gravelines, Wissant, Wimereux, Sangatte, Hardelot, Le Touquet and Berck. The white sand beaches have tides that recede up to 3 kilometres and strong winds notably around the Straits of Dover.

However, this spot is so much more than just wind sports, the combination of French, British and Belgian scenery have attracted skydivers from far and wide

If you’re a wind sport fan then this is a spot that cannot be missed!
