Taupo : ¿Qué hacer cuando llegas ahí?

Taupo is a beautiful adventurer’s paradise, located in the Waikato region, at the very center of New Zealand’s North island. It lies 80km South to another very popular touristic destination, Rotorua.

The city of Taupo sits at the edge of Lake Taupo, New Zealand’s largest lake, at the location where the Lake discharges into the Waikato river, which gives it names to the region. It is a very popular destination for tourists visiting the North islands, thanks to the panoramic views it offers over the lake, and to the mountains of Tongariro National Park across the lake.

Thanks to its unique location on both lake, mountain, and river, Taupo proposes a wide variety of touristic and outdoor activities.

Fishing on Lake Taupo

The lake has several fishing hot spots, such as Turangi, Kinloch, and Mangakino. Known especially for the abundance of Rainbow Trout in this area, fishing is a great family-friendly activity to do in Taupo. Several companies operate fishing tours from on the Lake itself, or in nearby rivers.

Hot Springs

Because of the volcanic activity in nearby Mount Tauhara, Taupo and its vicinity is home to many geothermal hot springs. Several hot springs or hot springs have been untouched and remain in their natural settings, such as the Otumuheke Stream Spa Park. Other springs have been organized into water parks or spas, such as the Taupo DeBretts Hot Springs. The park is another great family-friendly activity. Adults can enjoy the relaxing, healing natural baths while children play on the slides.

Huka Falls, Waikato river

Located just on the outskirts of Taupo town, the Huka Falls is a very popular sight for visitors. As the largest waterfall in New Zealand, the falls attract many tourists who can simply gaze at the massive rush of water down the mountain from the edges. Another thrilling way to experience the falls is by the Huka jet boat- the boat takes you down the Wairakei River right next to the falls so you can see the action up close!

Whitewater activities around Lake Taupo

With all of the waterfall action, Taupo is the perfect location for white water rafting. Rafting tours around Taupo are organized on different rivers, notably the Wairoa river, the Tongariro river and the Mohaka river. All offer different rafting experiences, and different rafting grades, from grade 2 for a family-friendly rafting descent, all the way to grade 5 on Wairoa river (expect some serious action). Either way, you're guaranteed great rides down some of New Zealand’s best rafting rivers.

Hiking or Mountain Biking

Travelers come from all over the world for the hiking and mountain biking trails that surround Taupo and the Lake, such as the Great Lake Trail or the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, south of the Lake. The latter is often coined as the country’s most popular trail. Parts of Lord of the Ring’s Mordor scenes and Mt Doom were indeed shot in the area, making the 19km hike a very popular (yet sporty) hike.

Air activities from Taupo

As one of the main adrenaline sports destinations of New Zealand, Taupo offers a wide array of air activities and extreme adventures. The three most popular airborne adventures include skydiving, bungee jumping and taking a helicopter tour. All three activities are available and operated from Taupo itself.

Taupo indeed hosts the largest commercial dropzone in New Zealand. With amazing views across the lakes and the Tongariro national park whilst in freefall, there is not shortage of reasons with Taupo sees more than 30 000 skydiving jumps every year.

Taupo’s bungee (or bungy as the locals spell it) is located within the city itself. It boasts a 47m jump with one of the only water-touch in New Zealand, over the Waikato River. You can also opt in for a giant swing over the river, in solo or duo.

Lastly but still quite notably, Taupo is host to the annual IRONMAN race, which brings professional athletes from all around the world to participate in.
