Description de l'activité

Travel to one of the most inaccessible parts of the Arctic on this two day snowshoeing excursion.

Head into the heart of polar bear country on this overnight snowshoeing adventure. With nothing but a small trail sledge and traditional snowshoes, follow in the footsteps of the nation’s proudest arctic pioneer – following tracks in the snow to a rustic cabin deep in the frozen valley of Disko Bay – a return to the wild you’ll never forget.

This activity is run & operated from Oqaatsut and travels into Disko Bay. Only 21km from neighbouring  Ilulissat, an intermediate ferry service runs during the winter months across Disko Bay.

Meet your guide in Oqaatsut for this two-day snowshoeing excursion in Disko Bay. A remote location cut off from neighbouring Ilulissat by fierce snow storms and below-freezing conditions, this tiny community is also frequented by polar nomads like the arctic fox, musk oxen, reindeer and the elusive Greenland polar bear.  Your adventure will start with a short safety briefing and kit check – loading up the pulks with the help your local guide before heading out into the heart of the Greenlandic wilderness. From here, you will travel through the ice pack north towards an isolated fjord using lightweight snowshoes – an easy alternative to traditional cross country skis. Reaching a rustic Brieuc Hut before dusk sets in, settle down for an evening Inuit style, feasting on local cuisine and learning more about local trailblazers like Knud Rasmussen -  the father of Eskimology. Stargazing is your evening entertainment – with the Northern Lights dancing high on a clear night’s sky. An early morning and a hearty breakfast set the pace for the day – packing up for a return trek to Oqaatsut.

Accommodation & Catering
This activity travels to a small heated cabin with basic facilities. Sleeping arrangements are single bunk-style and all participants will be required to carry equipment to and from the site. We use shared dry toilets, the only facilities in a number of small Greenlandic settlements. A participative experience, guests are invited to help with chores like cooking & cleaning.

This tour is organised in spring from February to April.  No previous experience is necessary, although you should be in good physical health and prepared for very cold temperatures.
