Our flight with MadeiraWings was the highlight of our trip to Madeira. From being picked up in the morning to being dropped off in the afternoon Rui and Alicia were incredibly friendly and gave us a warm welcome to the island. Rui’s knowledge and experience of paragliding was evident from the start so we always felt in safe hands. We headed straight for the landing area to make sure it was clear and then headed up to our launch point. From our vantage point we were given a stunning view of the ocean glittering in the light, and as the glorious sunshine warmed the mountains, thermals began to rise. Our excitement built as we felt cool breeze rush past and saw birds gently floating through the air. I being lightest went first and was kitted out in warm clothes and safety gear. We were given instructions on what to do during take off and landing (Listen to Rui and Run!) and told how to operate the go-pro that we would be using to film our flight. All that was left to do was to strap in to the tandem harness and wait for right moment... The breeze picked up and on Rui’s mark I began to run! Before I knew it I was bicycling in the air as we were gently lifted up into the great blue sky. We soared up and out over the cliffs until we had gleaming ocean on one side and verdant Madeira on the other. It was a surprisingly relaxing experience, that gave me a new perspective of the world. Sweeping along the coastal cliffs with the seabirds was altogether surreal but the highlight for me was when we headed out over the ocean. Being able to only see blue sky above and blue sea below was liberating and made all the more thrilling when I was given a taste of adrenaline by experiencing a turn that sent us rushing down for a few seconds. After a smooth landing I was left with a huge smile and sense of satisfaction... we’d been in the air for an amazing 25 minutes! On the way home they were kind enough to take us to the Cabo Girão (Highest sea cliff in Europe) sky walk (2nd highest in the world) and even set us up with a friend of theirs to do a Jeep tour of the island. We both decided to purchase a video of our flight for a very reasonable €10 which was brilliantly edited together by Alicia.
