Having the tallest mountain in continental Portugal, the Serra da Estrela National Park is one of the first designated parks in Portugal and is also, the largest protected area with an area of 888 square meters with the more than half located over 700 m.

As one of the most important reservoirs of Portugal’s natural richness, the Serra da Estrela National Park is highly recognized as a place for conservation and revitalization of Portugal’s local heritage and is the result of the cooperation among local authorities and the government. Among the many efforts done in Serra da Estrela are promoting grazing, handmade cheese manufacturing and the protection of the Serra da Estrela dog, an endemic species.

The natural park’s relative geographic isolation provides interesting diversity in fauna and flora. In the park, you are likely to come across golden eagles, falcons, boar, otters, foxes and even wolves, so keep an eye out during your hikes!

Being surrounded by mountains, adventures sports include hiking, climbing, canyoning and mountain biking. The numerous rock formations attract mountaineers of all levels, but the most interesting peak to conquer is the Torre plateau where you can find the Zezere glacial valley. For adventurers who rather enjoy contemplating nature, the park offers 250 kilometers of drawn paths that can be shared sometimes with mountain bikers.

Thanks to the streams of water and the glaciers, creeks, and canyons have formed. This kind of phenomena allows you to engage in one of the most exhilarating activities you can do in nature, canyoning. The Poço do Inferno, literally « Hell’s well » is a four-hour waterfall route that you will explore schistose peaks formed as a consequence of hot magma flowing through the rocks, absolutely spectacular!

Maybe the most unconventional activity you can practice in the Serra da Estrela National Park is getting into a SUP excursion in Lagoa Comprida, the highest lake in Portugal embedded right in the top of the mountain’s summit.
