Activity description

A mind-blowing wildlife expedition – travel to Alta for this whale watching experience.

One of the largest whale migrations in the world, Alta is the last port of call on the annual cetacean route from summer breeding grounds in the Azores to the icy waters of the Arctic – drawing sperm whales, minkes and orcas to feed in staggering numbers just offshore. Head out with marine experts to learn more about the cultural heritage and natural legacy of whales in Norway on this wildlife safari from Alta.

Alta is a city and port town in northern Norway.  A major cultural hub above the Arctic Circle, it is famed as a viewing point for the Northern Lights and the great whale migration. There are many daily domestic flights to Alta Airport. Most international flights to Alta require changing planes at Oslo Airport.

Meet your team at the port in Alta for this full-day whale watching excursion. You’ll head out in the morning, cruising toward the waters where whales live and play. Learning more about the types of whale and their behaviours from a specialist marine biologist, marvel at the stunning arctic scenery as you go, from the fall or winter sky overhead to the mountains along the shore, snow-capped or fully clothed in white depending on the season. The captain and crew will take good care of you along the way, serving a light lunch and dinner on the way back to Alta. Sightings include sperm whales, pilot whales, minke whales, humpbacks, dolphins, and killer whales. Depending on when you book, the tour may also include a chance to see the northern lights overhead on your return journey. No matter what the weather, you’ll have an exciting time surrounded by the nature of the fjord and a cosy and comfortable ride in a spacious and seaworthy boat.

Please note that whilst sightings are very frequent, they are fully natural and cannot be guaranteed. Guests are recommended to bring binoculars or long-zoom cameras to help improve their chances of seeing/capturing the action.
